Empowering Future Healthcare Leaders: A Mentorship Initiative Transforming Lives
Connecting Pre-Health BLD Students with Accomplished Spartan Alumni
In the ever-evolving world of healthcare, success requires more than just knowledge and technical skills — it also demands guidance, support, and the wisdom of those who have paved the way. At Michigan State University, Spartans uplift Spartans, ensuring that each new generation is equipped to achieve their goals. For many students, especially first-generation college students and those becoming the first doctors in their families, mentorship serves as the crucial bridge between ambition and achievement.
With 30% of Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics (BLD) students pursuing pre-health tracks such as medical, dental, physician assistant, and other graduate programs, the need for mentorship is greater than ever. In response, a transformative mentorship initiative has been launched to connect pre-health BLD students with accomplished Spartan alumni eager to give back.
Led by the BLD Alumni Association, the BLD Advising Office, and myself, a proud Spartan and current pathology resident at the University of Michigan, this initiative is founded on the belief that mentorship is more than just occasional advice. It is about forging lasting, impactful relationships that empower the next generation of healthcare professionals.
By building and strengthening this network of experienced mentors, we can ensure that future Spartan healthcare leaders gain the insight, encouragement, and confidence needed to turn their aspirations into reality. At MSU, we don’t just shape careers—we cultivate a legacy of Spartans supporting Spartans.
Navigating the Path to Medicine: The Power of Mentorship
For students without direct family ties to the healthcare profession, the journey to medical school can feel like navigating uncharted waters without a compass. The challenges are daunting: securing shadowing opportunities, deciphering medical school applications, preparing for interviews, and making critical career decisions, often without a personal roadmap to follow. This is where mentorship makes all the difference! More than just guidance, mentorship provides a support system, a source of inspiration, and a community that believes in each student’s potential.
As a first-generation doctor, I know firsthand the impact mentorship can have. Navigating the path to medical school felt overwhelming, but having mentors like Dr. James Billman, who had been in my shoes, gave me the clarity, encouragement, and confidence to push forward. The invaluable mentorship that I received for nearly a decade from MSU alum Dr. Billman has had a huge impact on my life. Now, I am committed to paying it forward, ensuring that future Spartans, especially those forging new paths in their families, have the same support that helped me succeed.
Dr. Billman, an experienced mentor, emphasizes the importance of proactive preparation. "Mentorship works best when students understand that they are the CEOs of their own journeys to medicine," he explains. "It’s crucial to research medical school requirements early; discovering too late that a dream school added a statistics requirement could mean extra summer coursework after graduation. Successful applicants track their volunteer work, shadowing experiences, and reference letters, staying ahead of deadlines for primary and secondary applications."
As a mentor, Dr. Billman guides students through application prompts, strategizes how to address challenges in their records, and provides feedback on multiple drafts of personal statements. "I’ll proofread and offer suggestions, but I won’t write essays for you," he notes. "These things take time, so start early. When interview invitations come, I’ll help with mock interviews. And when those acceptance letters arrive, I’ll celebrate with you!"
Through dedicated mentorship, students gain more than just professional advice; they gain a lifeline of support to navigate the complexities of a medical career with confidence.
Dr. Billman and I now share a decade-long friendship rooted in a joy of medicine, music, and philanthropy.

The Spartan Ripple Effect: Transforming Lives & Careers
Mentorship isn’t just about giving advice—it’s about building a legacy. It’s a two-way relationship that fosters growth, inspiration, and excellence within the Spartan BLD community.
For students, having a mentor can be life-changing. Mentors boost confidence, provide clarity, and make ambitious goals feel achievable. The guidance of someone who has been there before, whether it’s applying to medical or PA school, navigating residency, or entering the world of allied health, can make all the difference.
For Spartan alumni in healthcare, mentoring is a chance to give back in a meaningful way. Whether you’re an MD, DO, DDS, PA, PhD, MLS, or other allied health professional, your experiences can shape the future of aspiring Spartans. Many of us remember the challenges of our own journeys. Now, we have the opportunity to help the next generation not just survive but thrive!
