Scholarships and Financial Aid

BLD Program Scholarship applications are due March 31 of each year. Award decisions are announced by August 1 of each year and funds are dispersed prior to the start of the Fall semester. Submit the application to the BLD Program Office, North Kedzie Hall, 354 Farm Lane, Room N322, E. Lansing, MI 48824, Fax: 517-432-2006. You may also submit your application by email to Kate Fandrick (fandrick@msu.edu). If you have financial need outside of the normal application deadlines, talk with your BLD Advisor.

The following scholarships are designated by their donors for students pursuing degrees in the Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program.

Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics (BLD) Program Scholarships

Scholarship Name Eligibility Selection Criteria
Pamela Agren Memorial Scholarship Undergraduates of junior standing or higher by the award year or graduate students Applicants are selected on the basis of previous academic achievement, professional goals, and/or financial need.
Eleanor L. Barrett Scholarship in Medical Technology Undergraduates, including entering freshmen Applicants are judged on the basis of their academic records. Preference will be given to those applicants who demonstrate financial need.
Eleanor L. Barrett Medical Technology Discretionary Endowed Fund Undergraduate and graduate students Applicants are selected through the judgment of the selection committee.
Pamela Costabile Endowed Scholarship in Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Undergraduates of junior standing or higher by the award year Applicants are selected on the basis of previous academic achievement, professional goals, and/or financial need.
Lori Ann Neer-Swantko Endowed Scholarship Undergraduates of junior standing or higher by the award year Applicants selected shall be in good academic standing.
Florence Nothstine Endowed Scholarship for Medical Technology Resident in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin; Undergraduates with four semesters or fewer remaining, or a graduate student; Applicant must be working at least part-time while attending school. Applicants are selected based on good academic standing and financial need.

Additional Scholarships available to BLD Students

A.L. Rogers Endowed Research Scholarship

The Rogers endowment was initiated to honor Dr. Alvin Rogers, a significant contributor to the body of knowledge in medical mycology and an outstanding educator. This scholarship of $500 - $2,500 is awarded to a graduate student(s) doing research on the pathogenic fungi and fungal-like organisms. The award is NOT limited to students majoring in the BLD program. Applications are due April 30th of each year. Contact the BLD program for more information.

MSU Student Affairs and Services

MSU Student Affairs and Services has more than 20 scholarships available for undergraduate and graduate students. The deadline for most of these scholarships is March. U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is offering a scholarship to individuals pursuing their education (B.S. degree or higher) in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technologist or a related field such as chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, or immunology if they are completing a medical technology clinical practice program leading to ASCP certification. This scholarship pays 100% tuition moving forward plus a monthly living stipend (currently $1,153) while attending classes. Typically, our scholarship recipients fill positions nationally. However, qualified students applying through your program will be hired as a federal employee at the Detroit VAMC.  If you have students interested – please have them reach out to myself of Asya Bierman at Asya.Bierman@va.gov

Scholarships from Professional Societies

COLA's GiveBack365 program

The deadline for application is Decembem 15, 2023.

COLA's GiveBack365 program offers a limited number of $500 academic scholarships to aid students currently pursuing a degree in the field of Medical Laboratory Science or Technology within an accredited educational program. This scholarships are meant to increase the awareness of careers in laboratory medicine and to support those individuals who will become the future of the industry.

ASCLS Education and Research fund and Alpha Mu Tau Fraternity

Applications for Scholarships provided by ASCLS Education and Research Fund and Alpha Mu Tau Fraternity are now available at this link: Alpha Mu Tau Fraternity Scholarship page. There are separate applications for scholarships for students in MLT and MLS programs.  There is one application for students in graduate programs, however, applicants must indicate which type of program they are enrolled (Masters, PhD, or DCLS). 

American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science - Michigan (ASCLS-MI)

The Michigan state chapter of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) offers scholarships described at https://www.ascls-michigan.org/about/awards.

American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

Scholarships are awarded by Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics through ASCP. Information on various scholarships is available at http://ascp.org/scholarships. ASCP student membership is required to apply. Membership is free and provides a limited array of membership benefits. More information at
www.ascp.org.

South Central Association for Clinical Microbiologists (SCACM)

Each spring SCACM offers a scholarship for students aiming toward careers in medical laboratories. Check back at the website http://scacm.org/ periodically for the annual announcement.

Michigan Environmental Laboratory Association (MELA)

Some students in the BLD majors may have extracurricular experiences related to environmental laboratories that will allow them to apply for the Bryce McHale MELA Scholarship. Application information is available at http://www.michlabs.org/scholarship.html.

Scholarships from Industrial Partners

American Proficiency Institute (API)

API was founded in Traverse City, MI by MSU BLD alum, Dan Edson, MS, MT(ASCP). API offers scholarships each year during the fall. Check the website www.api-pt.com for the announcement.

National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences
