Basic Duties of Hospital Services Tech II

  • Evaluates and prepares samples for testing and performs applicable product/donor testing.
  • For devices such as testing equipment, documents the acceptable equipment operating conditions during equipment operation, function checks, maintenance and service according to SOP.
  • As applicable, performs required donor/sample/product testing and quality control. Performs sampling and QC testing on blood products. Performs routine CBC testing, and as applicable, antigen confirmation.
  • Functions as a subject matter expert in their area of oversight.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Distribution Specialist

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Associates Degree in health science is preferred.

Basic Duties of Hospital Services Tech I

  • Maintains regulatory compliance with established standards, practices, and regulations. As follow up to discrepancies, performs necessary adjustments to workflow to ensure compliance, seeks ways to improve standard work practices in order to be more effective in performing required tasks.
  • Performs required distribution functions for picking, packing, shipping, and returns of blood products following company guidelines and established SOP’s.
  • Receives and unpacks imported and other blood components in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Performs required additional product modification (Site dependent functions include but not limited to: irradiation, volume reduction, washed, frozen and deglycerolization).
  • Consults with Hospital Services Supervisor to brainstorm problems or develop new processes for continuous process improvement as well as assist with required validations.
  • Notifies and consults with manufacturer support staff to identify and resolve problems associated with equipment, supplies, or reagents in order to maintain smooth laboratory operation.
  • Performs second checks of component production and/or testing results for completeness and acceptability (lot release).
  • Notifies customer and other locations of delays and/or problems.
  • Performs required instrument quality control, maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • As qualified and required based on site functions, trains staff and assesses staff competency in component preparation.
  • Packs and ships frozen recovered plasma.
  • Provide stewardship of blood product components through monitoring of inventory levels, product selection, product outdating and notification and/or communication with appropriate staff or management in matters related to the blood component inventory or issue selection.
  • Maintains a clean, organized workplace and ensures that adequate supplies are available and bio-hazard materials and medical waste appropriately disposed.
  • Promotes excellent customer service for customers (both internal and external), donors, and the general public via professional appearance, communications, and demeanor.
  • Reviews and proposes changes to SOPs on an annual basis.
  • Functions as a subject matter expert in their area of operation for continuous improvement purposes.
  • Additional relevant duties as assigned.

Determines the validity of test results through the monitoring and/or verifying of quality controls, standards, etc. Communicates test results, reference ranges, specimen requirements, and other pertinent information to authorized sources.

  • Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Performs laboratory testing in a compliant manner.
  • Maintains regulatory knowledge and awareness as it pertains to specific job duties.
  • Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Assumes responsibility for and takes action regarding any quality control or quality assurance issues as it pertains to specific job duties.
  • Maintains instruments and equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Assumes responsibility for good documentation practices and maintains clear and legible records.
  • Performs proficiency testing in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations i.e. analyze proficiency survey sample in the same manner as a patient specimens, no communication with other CLIA laboratories, complete record retention and accurate documentation and result reporting.
  • Assumes responsibility for participation in continuing education, professional development and required annual competency assessment.
  • Follows the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.

Newborn Screening Section Chief (Senior Public Service Administrator Option 4) located in Chicago, IL.

The Newborn Screening (NBS) Section has a staff of 30 and tests all newborns (approximately 175,000 births per year) in the State of Illinois for genetic and metabolic disorders. The Section Chief supervises the NBS Section in the Chicago Laboratory, subject to the provisions of CLIA and other applicable federal and state statutes and regulations. The Section Chief will oversee all daily operations within the NBS Section while also planning for future testing needs. Illustrative examples of job duties include: Working with follow up programs within IDPH and clinical care providers.
